Samsung Canada has announced that the latest Samsung Gear devices, which includes the Gear S3, Gear S2, and Gear Fit2, are now compatible with iOS devices running iOS 9.0 or higher. Compatibility comes via the Samsung Gear Fit app available in the Apple App Store. Once installed, the app guides users through pairing the Samsung Gear device with their iOS device.

“We are constantly innovating with technology for Canadians to fit their connected lives,” said Paul Brannen, COO and Executive Vice President, Mobile Solutions, Samsung Canada. “By offering both Android and iOS compatibility with our latest Gear devices, we’re giving consumers more ways to enhance their wearable experience and connect to Samsung’s Galaxy of possibilities.”

Samsung does indicate that functions and features will vary, but iOS users will be able to track their fitness by monitoring distance and route traveled, running pace, calories burned, and heart rate with the new rugged Gear S3 Frontier or the more elegant Gear S3 Classic — both of which are IP68 water and dust resistant.

While the Apple Watch does do some fitness tracking tasks, and there are other iOS compatible fitness trackers on the market, it’s always a good thing for consumers to have extra choices, and it’s definitely interesting to see Samsung adding iOS compatibility to their latest Gear devices.
