Samsung investigation to report the battery was the cause of Note7 fires

Reuters is reporting that a source familiar with the Samsung investigation into the cause of the Note7 fires is indicating that the battery was the root cause. The details of the investigation weren’t reported by Reuters so we’re still not completely clear what exactly was wrong with the batteries. Reuters does report that Samsung should be releasing the investigation results on January 23rd so hopefully, we will get some clarity into the full cause. The Note7 problems have created a very large black eye for Samsung and they are doing as much as possible to pull themselves back up from a devasting hit.

“They’ve got to make sure they come clean and they’ve got to reassure buyers as to why this won’t happen again,” said Bryan Ma, Singapore-based analyst for researcher IDC.

Some are still speculating that Samsung’s design may be at fault here as well, citing that Samsung’s push to be thinner led to not leaving enough room in the chassis for the battery to safely sit.

“To me it’d be surprising if they said it was a supplier issue,” IDC’s Ma said, adding he suspects Samsung may not have given enough room for the battery inside the phone.

The source told Reuters on Monday that Samsung was able to replicate the fires during its investigation and that the cause for the fires could not be explained by hardware design or software-related matters.

Samsung is preparing for the launch of their Galaxy S8 smartphone in a few weeks, so wrapping up the Note7 story is of paramount importance. Releasing investigation results and making amends with consumers is going to be one of the deciding factors of the success of future Samsung smartphones.
