Batten down the hatches! There’s a rumor the Google Pixel 2 will ditch the headphone jack

It’s one thing to write about iPhone rumors and quite another to write about Google Pixel 2 rumors, especially when the fan base disagrees with said rumor. That being said, 9to5 Google is reporting a doozy of a rumor that has already gotten many Android fans in a tizzy. The rumor claims that the Google Pixel 2 will ditch the headphone jack just like Apple ditched it on the iPhone 7. 9to5 Google is claiming to have credible inside information from a document they’ve personally gazed upon from Google themselves that states this as fact. Of course, 9to5 Google is claiming that protection of sources is keeping them from sharing anything more than their word.

According to an internal Google document seen by 9to5Google, the Mountain View company’s next-generation Pixel flagship will forgo the headphone jack. That would be a departure from the current Pixel, for which Google has touted the jack’s inclusion as a key feature over Apple’s latest iPhone 7 offerings…

While we can’t share the nature of the documentation without putting the source at risk, we can say that the language used presents the removal of the jack as a matter of fact. That said, this information is coming from only a single source and we haven’t been able to obtain secondary confirmation as of yet.

9to5 Google has also assigned a confidence score of 6/10 to this rumor which is still fairly low so this rumor should be taken with copious grains of sodium chloride.

That said, we give this rumor a score of 6 out of 10 because we were provided source documentation that appears legitimate. In other words, while we can’t assure you beyond a shadow of a doubt that the second-gen Pixel will indeed ship without the jack when it launches later this year, we can say with high confidence that this single internal document implies as such.

What do you think of this rumor? Do you currently have a smartphone without a headphone jack? Do you miss it? Let us know in the comments below or on Twitter, Facebook, and Google+.
