Let’s just get this out in the open. No, Apple is not the first to use OLED technology in its phones but it’s been a request that many people have had. Samsung has been the king of the OLED smartphone and Samsung will be the ones supplying the OLED iPhone panels to at least 70 million devices. Apple has never been one to jump on the latest tech trends when it comes to their flagship device, that’s not always been the smartest of moves. The amount of OLED iPhone displays being shipped sort of enforces the rumor that there will only be one model of iPhone to take advantage of the OLED display.
“Apple has ordered 70 million units of OLED panels from Samsung this year, while Samsung is preparing to churn out as many as 95 million for Apple in 2017, in case demand exceeds expectations,” Hsieh said.
The most interesting part of this iPhone OLED news is Nikkei’s predictions that the OLED displays will be 5.2″ and set into the top tier iPhone X/8. There have been rumors that there will be three different iPhones, the 4.7″ and 5.5″ we know now, as well as a third device which had been rumored to be bigger than 5.5″ and be and edge-to-edge design. Now Nikkei is saying these Samsung built OLED’s are 5.2″ which should be interesting but I think could make the device less desirable.
The site believes we will see a premium OLED iPhone with a 5.2-inch screen and no home button, which will be sold alongside standard 4.7 and 5.5-inch devices with LCD screens and home buttons. All three iPhones will include wireless charging functionality (lately said to be inductive) and waterproofing, while at least one model, presumably the OLED iPhone, will include a 3D sensor that supports facial recognition.
One thing’s for certain, Apple’s next iPhone really needs to be something consumers will want to upgrade or switch to. Samsung may be providing their OLED panels but they also have their own flagship phone that looks really tempting.
