Verizon Galaxy S6 edge users getting surprise Nougat update

Just because Samsung has released the new Galaxy S8 and S8+ doesn’t mean that they’ve forgotten about some of their older phones. It may also just be that the carrier review process has taken two full phone cycles to complete, but some users are in for a treat today. Verizon Galaxy S6 edge users are getting an Android dessert-themed treat with the 7.0 Nougat update rolling out to the phone right now.

A reader sent us the screenshot below of the Nougat update in progress. At the time the update started, there was no word on Verizon’s website that users should expect the update, though their Advanced Devices Software Update page does now list the Nougat update as available.

Mmm… Nougat

Unless our reader is part of some pilot program they’re unaware of, it’s safe to assume that Verizon’s S6 edge Nougat update is in the wild. Users can look forward to some of the new features in Nougat including improved battery management options such as customizable presets for medium and maximum power saver modes. Nougat also natively supports multi-window split-screen, though that feature was already available on some Samsung phones.

The update also includes camera updates on the S6 edge that allow for live photo filter previews. Swiping left after opening the camera app will give a preview of all available filters, allowing you to choose your favorite for that particular photo. Users can also look forward to Android security updates, which while less exciting than some of the other stuff are still very important.

Are you an S6 edge user on Verizon? Have you seen the Nougat update come through already? Let us know in the comments below or on Google+, Twitter, or Facebook.
