Microsoft pulls the curtain back on its $999 Surface Laptop

Microsoft had an event today in which they introduced Windows 10 S, but that’s not it. Alongside Windows 10 S, the company pulled the curtain back on the Surface Laptop. The Surface Laptop is a $999USD machine that looks strikingly like a Surface Pro with the keyboard. The 13.5″ Surface Laptop is a looker for certain, the materials Microsoft showed off look super-premium, I especially love the fabric-Alcantara keyboard.

The laptop will be running Windows 10 S, which is the streamlined version of Windows which will run apps from the Microsoft Store. You can upgrade the laptop to full Windows 10 Pro for an extra fee. The Surface Laptop will come in four colors, platinum, burgundy, cobalt blue, and graphite gold and it weighs just under 3lbs.

Microsoft is using a 13.5-inch PixelSense display with a 3:2 aspect ratio. “This is the thinnest LDC touch model every created and put into a laptop,” says Panay, complete with 3.4 million pixels. The screen even supports Microsoft’s Surface Pen, so you can draw on the display just like other Surface devices.

“The performance on this device is absolutely amazing,” says Panay. Microsoft is using the latest Intel Core i5 and i7 processors, and claims the battery life will last for 14.5 hours as a result. Microsoft claims the Surface Laptop is faster than the i7 MacBook Pro, and it has “more battery life than any MacBook Air on the market today.”

Microsoft made certain the audience understood that this device was high-quality. The design cues and lack of seams, speaker grills, and visible hinges were pointed out over and over. It’s obvious that Microsoft is pricing their hardware higher than their PC partners so as not to disturb their market. Not everyone is going to want to pay $999 for a Windows 10 S laptop so manufacturers like Acer, Lenovo, and Dell will likely be marketing more affordable machines running Windows 10 S.
