Essential Phone will be exclusive to Sprint

Essential Phone

If you’re not on Sprint, don’t worry because the phone will still be able to be bought unlocked and should work fine with other networks.

It’s 2017 and cell phone companies still offer exclusive handsets. No one likes exclusive phones and carriers just don’t get it. Verizon has it with Lenovo… Moto… who knows the name at this point because it keeps changing, AT&T did it with the iPhone long ago and still does it with the Active series of the newest Samsung Galaxy devices and so on. Sprint does it too and they’re doing it again as the exclusive carrier partner for the Essential Phone.

A report from USA Today claims that the Essential Phone will be exclusive to Sprint later this summer when the phone launches. Why Sprint you ask? Well, Essential President Niccolo de Masi states they’re going in the direction the market is going and the network of the future.

We like to bet with where we think the market is going as opposed to where the market was. I feel like we are a new brand and a new consumer electronics company and we are partnering with the network of the future.

If you’re not on Sprint, don’t worry because the phone will still be able to be bought unlocked and should work fine with other networks, it’s just Sprint will be the only carrier in the US that will be offering this handset. The wireless carrier also hasn’t mentioned how long this exclusive will be, so you may be able to get it from another carrier when and if they pick it up. We’ll just have to wait and see. Sprint hasn’t announced any prices yet, but you can expect it’ll probably be around $699USD like its unlocked counterpart.
