Hyperloop One ups the ante with their second major test

In this test, XP-1 went significantly faster at 192 MPH.

It was only a couple of weeks ago that Hyperloop One took the wraps off of their first successful test in the Nevada desert. The first test took things slow, but the company has really ramped things up for their second test. Hyperloop One loaded their first-generation pod, the XP-1, into their test track and dialed the speed up a few notches.

While the last test was impressive, Phase 2 — which happened just a few days ago on July 29th — provides a much clearer look at how Hyperloop travel will operate. In this test, XP-1 went significantly faster at 192 MPH. It also covered a much longer distance (1,433 feet vs. 315 feet), had a significantly longer propulsion segment (300m vs. 30m), which allowed the pod to achieve much more power than the previous test (3,151hp vs. 891hp). This test showed off all aspects of the XP-1 and Hylerloop One’s test track, including the pressurized tube and vacuum system, the advanced electric motor, and the magnetic levitation and guidance on the pod itself. Man, the sound of the XP-1 basically floating down the track is amazing. Executive Chairman and Co-fouder of Hyperloop One Shervin Pishevar was obviously very excited about the test, and specifically mentioned the sound of the pod as well:

Hyperloop One Goes Farther and Faster Achieving Historic Speeds

World’s First Autonomous Pod Successfully Completes Inaugural Test Run

NEW YORK, Aug. 2, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — As the only company in the world that has built an operational Hyperloop system, Hyperloop One continues to make history with the successful completion of its second phase of testing. On July 29, 2017, Hyperloop One completed Phase 2, achieving historic test speeds traveling nearly the full distance of the 500-meter DevLoop track in the Nevada desert. The Hyperloop One XP-1, the company’s first-generation pod, accelerated for 300 meters and glided above the track using magnetic levitation before braking and coming to a gradual stop.

During phase 2, Hyperloop One achieved record speeds, in a tube depressurized down to the equivalent of air at 200,000 feet above sea level. All components of the system were successfully tested, including the highly efficient electric motor, advanced controls and power electronics, custom magnetic levitation and guidance, pod suspension and vacuum system.

With Hyperloop One, passengers and cargo are loaded into a pod, and accelerate gradually via electric propulsion through a low-pressure tube. The pod quickly lifts above the track using magnetic levitation and glides at airline speeds for long distances due to ultra-low aerodynamic drag.
