MoviePass rolls out $9.95 USD monthly plan that sounds too good to be true

We love movies here at Techaeris, and I try to bring at least some timely movie reviews to our readers. Some may have noticed that the movies reviewed are pretty much just movies that I already wanted to see, but buying all kinds of movie tickets can get expensive. MoviePass wants to change that, and they’re offering a plan that quite honestly seems too good to be true. For $9.95 USD per month, users can see one movie per day… nearly any movie… in nearly any theater.

Netflix co-founder Mitch Lowe took over the startup in 2016 when it offered a similar deal but for $30 USD per month. Even at that price an avid movie-goer could find a definite value in the service. Under $10 is a complete steal. When you consider the average price of a single movie ticket is $8.84 USD, you’d only need to go to two movies per month to get a huge value out of the new price.

There are, of course, several caveats, though they’re relatively minor. MoviePass will work at any US theater that accepts debit cards. MoviePass cannot be used for IMAX or 3D showings. There’s also the small matter of how your personal data and movie watching habits will be used in order to tailor some targeted advertising for you, though really what service isn’t tailoring targeted advertising for you based on your habits these days?

Really though, if you like to watch movies in theaters and don’t mind seeing some targeted advertising similar to what you’re already seeing on services such as Google or Facebook, MoviePass is a service you’re going to want to check out. At the national average ticket price, it would cost you more than $250 per month to see a different movie every day. That doesn’t even account for popcorn or other snacks. You’ll need an iPhone or Android phone to get started, but that’s hardly a barrier for most people these days either.

What do you think about MoviePass? Does it offer a compelling service for your movie watching needs? Let us know in the comments below or on Google+, Twitter, or Facebook.
