Canadians will be able to also earn points for shopping in the Windows Store and Microsoft Store, as well as searching with Bing.

Microsoft Rewards (previously Bing Rewards) have been around for some time in the U.S., and were more recently made available in the U.K., France, Germany, and Australia. The rewards program is now adding Canada to that list as Xbox Live Rewards will soon become Microsoft Rewards in Canada. the news is being sent in an email to Xbox Live Rewards members and with a popup notification on the Xbox Rewards website.

If you’re Canadian and visit the Xbox Live Rewards site, you should see this popup notification.

So just what is Microsoft Rewards? In addition to earning points for purchasing games, movies, and TV shows in the Xbox Store, you can now also earn points for shopping in the Windows Store and Microsoft Store. You can also earn points when you search the web with Bing and then redeem your points for Xbox gift cards, Skype Credits, sweepstakes entries, and more. Of course, some will argue that the Rewards program is a sly way for Microsoft to increase their Microsoft Edge and Bing share numbers.

While Xbox Live Rewards Credits were deposited into your Microsoft account twice a month and could be redeemed for anything in the Xbox Store from games to movies and TV, the Microsoft Rewards Points are deposited into your account after you complete a rewardable action. Any existing or MyVIP points pending in your Xbox Live Rewards account will transfer to Microsoft Points by October 31.

The MyVIP program will be changing slightly as well and your MyVIP Star Rank will get you additional Rewards bonuses through December 31, 2018, as well as automatic Microsoft Rewards Level 2 status. Unfortunately, you will not be able to improve your MyVIP star rank after September 30, 2017.

No date was given for the switch from Xbox Live Rewards to Microsoft Rewards but those who do not want to join the new program have until October 7, 2017, to opt-out. Presumably, the new program will start at the beginning of October for Canadians. If you choose to opt-out, your existing Xbox Live Rewards will be transferred to your Microsoft account in the form of Canadian currency and you will have 365 days to spend that currency on items from the Xbox Store.

While the email is being sent to Canadians with Xbox Live Rewards account, it’s presumable that other countries that have Microsoft Rewards will see a similar migration and sunsetting of the Xbox Live Rewards program as well. Checking U.S.  Xbox Live Rewards accounts seem to be sticking with the status quo for the time being.
