More Overwatch heroes joining Heroes of the Storm

Blizzard has been adding roughly one new hero to Heroes of the Storm each month and it was only a matter of time before more Overwatch heroes joined the fray. Hot on the release of the Kel’Thuzad addition and event, the two new heroes — Ana and Junkrat — are also bringing with them a new Battleground and event.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Overwatch, Ana is “a veteran Support sniper who helped found the world-protecting team of heroes known as Overwatch.” Junkrat, on the other hand, is “an unpredictable demolitionist Assassin and general miscreant who lives to cause chaos and destruction.”

Of course, we’ll have to wait until the Ana and Junkrat Spotlight videos to find out more about what skills they’ll be bringing over from Overwatch into Heroes of the Storm.

As far as the new Battlefield goes, Volskaya Foundry will be bringing with it some new game mechanics not seen in other Battlegrounds to date. The new Battleground has some new features:

  • Capture Points: Control points activate occasionally. Stand within them to capture them. Fully capturing a point grants you control of a giant mech.
  • Control the Protector: The Triglav Protector mech is controlled by two players: one pilot and one gunner. Work together!
  • Destroy Everything: The Protector’s abilities deal incredible damage to structures and Heroes alike. Use it to lay waste to your enemy.
  • Conveyor Belts: Moving conveyor belts around the objectives add an extra moving element to the Battleground.

While capture points aren’t something new entirely new — they are used to gain control of the Dragon Knight or shoot lasers from shrines at opposing structures, using them to gain control of a giant mech controlled by two players is new. Players can currently work together as one unit when they select the Cho and Gall heroes, but having a Battleground piloted objective controlled by two players is definitely a new game mechanic. Currently, objectives like the Dragon Knight and the Garden Terror are controlled by one player.

The Volskaya Foundry Battleground will also spill over into a new single-lane Volskaya Village brawl in which each team receives a Protector at the start of the game. The Protectors do respawn, but only after both have been destroyed! New sprays, banners, emojis, and skins will also be released, including Commandant Varian and Shrike Ana skins.

The new content will be accompanied by another event: Pachimari Mania! The Pachimari is an Overwatch creature that looks like an upside-down turnip. During the event, players will be tasked with opening Pachimari Boxes and finding Golden Pachimari to complete four quests for emoji, spray, banner, and portrait rewards.

Blizzard also teased a new D.Va skin on Twitter, alongside other new skins and mounts in development. You’ll be able to check them out in the PTR starting on Monday.

Of course, a release date has yet to be announced but we should hopefully be seeing the Volskaya Foundry update near the beginning of October based on the previous timing of hero announcements and releases.
