Razer could have a game focused mobile device ready by years end

Razer is well known for making some incredible gaming gear, some of which we’ve used ourselves. That’s why it was a bit odd when we found out the company acquired a mobile device maker when they purchased Nextbit. Now we know with total certainty why Razer bought a mobile device maker, to bring a gaming-focused mobile device to the market. Of course, we don’t know exactly what this device would look like, but one can imagine something akin to the PlayStation Portable or the Nintendo Switch.

Razer isn’t the first to try to merge a smartphone and a gaming system. Snail Games made an effort with their W3D phone a few years back. The project looked promising but seems to have fizzled out since we took a look at it back at CES 2015.

Unlike Snail Games, Razer has a bit more muscle to possibly bring something worthwhile to the market. While they’re not swimming in cash, they do at least have the reputation that should allow them to find investors to back the project and idea.

One of the most hotly rumored things about Razer is that we’re coming up with a mobile device. And I can say that we are coming up with a mobile device specifically geared toward gamers and entertainment,” Min-Liang Tan, CEO and co-founder of Razer, told CNBC’s “Managing Asia. We’re hoping to have it come … by the end of the year, so that’s something we’re working on.

The mobile market is one of those that we’ve taken a long-term view to look at … We realized that a lot of our gamers are also passionate about the mobile gaming market, so we’ve done a couple of moves. We would love to have that war chest to allow us to invest in R&D. We are known to have disrupted many industries: We’re the first in the gaming peripherals side of things, we were first when we invented the first true gaming laptop, we’ve gone on to provide one of the largest software platforms for gamers.

Having that war chest from the IPO would allow us to do all that and much more. And that’s what we want to continue doing: to make cool products.

An IPO will be the first step in a much longer journey: Razer CEO from CNBC

It will be interesting to see if Razer can bring a gaming-focused mobile device to market by years end. It’s certainly something many have been asking for.
