During the months and weeks of no smartphone announcements we the press like to leak and throw around these things called “rumors”. Today’s tidbit, Apple is developing their own “curved glass” display along with pressure sensitive sensors. Bloomberg is reporting that a source familiar with Apple planning has given them this little bit of info. We all know what the curved display is all about since LG and Samsung both have these out on the market now. What interests us is the sensors. Bloomberg says these sensors are able to detect different levels of pressure which is a very interesting bit of tech, if it works.
The source also hints that there will be two new iPhone screen sizes, 4.7″ and 5.5″ respectfully. This rumor I’m not so sure is true, 4.7″ has been the long rumored iPhone 6 size but I just don’t see Apple going up to a 5.5″ screen, at least this soon. They have held off a long time with anything over 4″, I think in order to feel out the market and demand. I think they’ll wait longer on anything over 4.7″ just to feel out the phablet market.
“Screen size is one of the things where Apple has to catch up to the Android camp,” Dennis Chan, an analyst at Yuanta Financial Holding Co. in Taipei, said, referring to phones using Google Inc.’s operating software. “Innovation in components has been a key for Apple since the first iPhone came out.”
Another thing to consider is. Who will be the supplier for these curved iPhone displays? We know that LG already supplies Apple with LCD displays and they have worked with Samsung in the past. And we already know that both Samsung and LG already make their own displays. Only time will tell how this all shakes out. Hit the links below for more details and sources.
