The Wachowskis are at it again, creating another potential cinematic masterpiece titled Jupiter Ascending. The creators of The Matrix and Cloud Atlas are nearly ready to unveil their latest science fiction movie. Warner Brothers released a new trailer yesterday for the epic space opera, which stars Mila Kunis, Channing Tatum, Sean Bean, and Eddie Redmayne.
The premise of the film is that, unbeknownst to Kunis’ destitute character, Jupiter Jones, she is actually next in line as Queen of the Universe. After a thwarted assassination attempt by Redmayne’s character, Balem Abrasax, Tatum’s Cain Wise and Bean’s Stinger team up to help Jupiter Jones save both her right to the throne and planet Earth from Abrasax’s evil ambitions. It will be interesting to see Redmayne portray a truly egotistical, villainous character, as we’re used to seeing him play the role of hero or underdog (see The Pillars of the Earth).
I also can’t wait to see how the Wachowskis tackle the big ideas and questions raised in this movie. Taking a look at their filmography, they rarely miss an opportunity to ask tough questions that make viewers question what they think they know. The big question in Jupiter Ascending appears to be: Where did we really come from, and who’s really in charge if we’re not alone?
Jupiter Ascending is set to be released in theaters in early February 2015.
