Robert Downey Jr. Joins Captain America 3, Sets Stage For Marvel’s Civil War

After confirming exciting news was on the horizon for Marvel and then teasing about Iron Man 4 rumors over the last few weeks, Robert Downey Jr. is in the final stages of negotiations for joining the cast of Captain America 3, which would set the stage for Marvel’s big Civil War storyline from the comicbook to the big screen, according to Variety.

RDJ’s presence is a significant development as the plot would turn that snappy banter and not-so-subtle tension between the two superheroes into a legitimate rift between Iron Man and Captain America. The feud stems from the Superhero Registration Act, which makes anyone with superhuman abilities to reveal their identities to the U.S. government, submit to mandatory training, and agree to act as if they were officers of the law. Naturally, one supports the program and the other does not, causing sides to be taken for both superheroes and civilians.

avengers-iron-man-captain-americaStark is reportedly to be painted into more of a villain-type role for his beliefs, and it could open up a new depth to the character for RDJ to sink his teeth into. RDJ is committed only to a third Avenger’s film so far, but could be involved in a fourth Avenger’s movie depending on how far Marvel is looking to take this storyline. The studio already has 11 released scheduled through 2019, including the second installment of the Avengers: Age of Ultron, as well as the debut of lesser known Ant-Man.

Marvel announced the Civil War reboot on Monday, with a picture of Spider Man (in his Iron Spider outfit) being pulled in one direction by Iron Man and in another direction by Captain America. The original Civil War mini-series was published in 2006 with several tie-in comics contributing to the storyline. The rebooted mini-series is set to be released in the summer of 2015.
