[UPDATE] First Star Wars: The Force Awakens Trailer Debuting In Theaters Friday

|

A lucky few theaters will be the first to show the initial trailer for the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens when it debuts this Friday. Regal Cinemas announced the trailer will be played prior to every movie in the nine theaters listed below.

CA Irvine — Edwards Irvine Spectrum 22 & IMAX
CA San Diego — Edwards Mira Mesa Stadium 18 IMAX & RPX
GA Atlanta — Regal Atlantic Station Stadium 18 IMAX & RPX
IL Chicago — Regal City North Stadium 14 IMAX & RPX
NY New York — Regal Union Square Stadium 14
PA Warrington — Regal Warrington Crossing Stadium 22 & IMAX
TN Knoxville — Regal Pinnacle Stadium 18 IMAX & RPX
TX Houston — Edwards Houston Marq’E Stadium 23 IMAX & RPX
WA Seattle — Regal Thornton Place Stadium 14 & IMAX

This seems like a weird premise today, with the internet and social sharing dominating how we see movie trailers, but it’s a way for Disney to guarantee the most cinematic experience possible for fans seeing the trailer first. The last time Star Wars made a return to the big screen after an extended absence, with 1999’s Star Wars Episode I: The Phatnom Menace, Lucas Films did the same exact thing with some interesting repercussions. There were reports of people lining up in droves to see A Bug’s Life, paying full price for a ticket, then leaving en masse when the trailer was over – until inevitably a bootleg appeared online. Trailers for Star Wars Episode II were shown before Pixar’s Monster’s Inc, and Star Wars Episode III were shown before The Incredibles.

Despite a few leaks from props on set and some intentional promotional teasers, Disney has done a good job of keeping the project under wraps. For the most part, this will be the our true first glimpse into the post-George Lucas era of Star Wars films.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is set to release December 18th, 2015.
