Apple Virtual Reality, Getting Ready To Take On Oculus Rift?

The following is a speculative editorial.

Apple Virtual Reality. It was only a matter of time before we saw Apple throw its hat into the world of VR albeit a small hat at the moment. Apple’s job board is specifically looking for an individual with a VR/AR development background so everything we’re talking about will be mere speculation based off of this job posting.

We are looking for a software engineer to develop UI and applications to create next generation software experiences. The individual must be able to take participate in collaborative and iterative UI design through the implementation phases & complete performant user experience code for product delivery. This engineer will create high performance apps that integrate with Virtual Reality systems for prototyping and user testing.

Virtual Reality is still a young technology and there is much to be done, but with the likes of Samsung and Sony testing the waters it makes sense that Apple would at least put a toe in. Apple is fiercely protective of its future projects and plans so we’ll probably not have much info about any of what they’re planning, if anything.

There are a couple of routes where Apple could compete in the VR market: gaming or cinema, and my bet is on the latter. Apple has never been much of a gaming company – although anything is possible – but they have had a good relationship with both the music and movie industries. Moving into cinematic VR would be a perfect fit for where they currently are and would give them the opportunity to leverage the entertainment relationships they have.

One job posting a for a Virtual Reality Engineer does not make a Virtual Reality Program, but it’s a sign that Apple is at least considering that path. Next year Apple will step into the wearables market with the Apple Watch. The success or failure of that project will likely have some impact on whether or not they move into yet another new market in Virtual Reality. Apple is generally conservative when it comes to moving into new market segments so this one job posting may not develop into anything until well in the future.
