Sprint Wants You To Think They’ll Halve Your Phone Bill

The feud between mobile service providers is more real than ever. Sprint, T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon are all fighting for the top spot and some are doing better than others. With many smaller companies having been swallowed up by the beasts over the past few years, there are fewer competitors in the market. This is not to say that the competition has lessened though. Marketing campaigns and promotional offers are consistently being released, the most memorable in recent future being T-mobile offering to pay you contract termination fee if you sign a contract with them. Pretty ingenious and I would go as far as to say some the most creative and original marketing campaigns come from these very service providers.

Today Sprint is one of the lower ranked service providers in the United States – and they know it. A few reasons Sprint is behind are because of poor decisions in which technology to host their services. Secondly they made some questionable acquisitions along with a few other things. Because of this Sprint is playing catch up and their new marketing campaign shows it. Spring headlines:

Cut Your Bill in Half Event! Bring us your Verizon or AT&T bill and we’ll cut your rate plan in half. For example, a Verizon customer paying $140 per month for 4 lines + 10GB of data can get 4 lines + 10GB of data on Sprint for $70 per month.

Woah you say. And I say so too, but it’s not all peachy. Remember that generally when you read something so seemingly fabulous, the Don Drapers of the world have been working on this campaign for a while now, and chances are it’s not going to be as good as it sounds.

And it’s not. Sprint says your bill and we’ll cut your rate plan in half. So If you bring your bill in that in total costs $150 bucks, but of that you pay $50 for devices, then Sprint will half the cost of your service, previously $100, to $50 but, and this is a big but, you will have to opt into Sprint’s device plan, which may end up costing you $50 dollars. So in reality you are thirding your bill, not halfing it. This isn’t the extent of the exclusions either. You’ll have to turn your old service provider’s phone over to Sprint, nor does this apply to additional lines. Something to keep in mind, though, is that the promo will pay your carrier’s contract termination fee. This promo certainly does not cut your bill in half, but it might save you some money if you do your research first.
