Gambit Movie Starring Channing Tatum Coming In 2016

20th Century Fox announced earlier today that a movie featuring popular X-Men member Gambit is coming October 7th, 2016, and will star Channing Tatum. The announcement came as part of a group of dates that Fox announced including Planet of the Apes being delayed until July of 2017, and the next Fantastic Four film being bumped up to June of 2017.
Like everyone else in the world, Fox seems content with pretending that X-Men Origins: Wolverine never existed, as this Gambit will likely be a different Gambit entirely from the one played by Taylor Kitsch. While Kitsch was mostly fine and had the right rogueish tone of the character, he lacked a lot of Gambit’s most notable features, including his signature Cajun accent. If Channing Tatum’s tweet confirming the casting is any indication, the accent may be making a comeback:

Channing Tatum has come a long way since it’s role as Tyler in Step Up and it’s unfortunate sequel. He recently starred in the critically acclaimed Foxcatcher and the thirty-four-year-old is also slated to have a role in The Hateful Eight, Hail, Ceasar!, and Jupiter Ascending.
Outside of Tatum’s involvement and the newly announced release date, not a whole lot is known about Gambit. We know that it is being written by Joshua Zetunmern, who wrote the 2014 Robocop, but nothing else has surfaced. Surely as the hype machine gets rolling and 2016 creeps closer we’ll hear more details, but at least we finally have a confirmation and a lead role.
If you’re counting the upcoming Deadpool as being an X-Men movie (Deadpool certainly would), then this Gambit adaptation would be the third film from the franchise in 2016 alone. Along with Deadpool in February and Gambit now in October, there is also X-Men: Apocalypse coming in May. That total would beat out movies from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is only adding Doctor Strange and the third Captain America movie in 2016, as well as DC, which has Batman vs Superman and Suicide Squad coming. 2016 is shaping up to the be the year that Fox attempts to prove to fans that they deserve to keep the X-Men movie rights.
