Ash Vs Evil Dead Will Have 30 Minute Episodes, Be Shot In New Zealand

|

When Ash vs Evil dead hits Starz in the near future, it will be with 30 minute episodes, not the full hour that many expected when the show was announced last year. This tidbit of info, along with other new details about the upcoming series, was revealed at the Television Critics Association press tour late last week.
Ash vs Evil dead, as we already know, will see Sam Raimi return to the series that he turned into a beloved cult hit in the the ’80s and early ’90sas well as everyone’s favorite boomstick-wielder Bruce Campbell reprising his starring role as Ash Williams.
Not much can really be gleaned from the fact that episodes in the new series will only be 30 minutes, but it does come as a surprise given the current trend of episodic television series being a full hour long. One encouraging note, if true, is the fact that it was Raimi, Campbell, and executive producer Rob Tapert’s idea to make the episodes 30 minutes in length, and not a decision from Starz directly. “The half hour idea was their idea,” Starz head Chris Albrecht stated, “And I can tell you it’s a chock-full half hour.”
As IGN is reporting, the series will be filmed in New Zealand, a location familiar to Raimi and Tapert. The duo have previously worked on another Starz show, Spartacus, which was also shot in the beautiful country. Being that Ash vs Evil Dead takes place in American towns, and not Middle-earth or ancient times, it will present some unique challenges to filming. For one, cars with the steering wheel on the left hand side will need to be imported, and prop signs will need to be brought in to hide the fact that they are in New Zealand.
Albrecht also talked about when the show will air, stating that it will “likely be in the fourth quarter [2015]. End of the third quarter, fourth quarter, something like that.”
