I’m a huge Chicago Blackhawks fan. I’ll just get that out of the way at the beginning. I’ve always been a fan of Hockey, and have been stuck with the NHL through the good times and the bad. As the fourth most-popular of the four major American sports, the NHL have tried various ways to differentiate themselves and offer viewers a better way to watch the games. Many have honestly been flops (does anybody else remember those horrible glowing pucks they tried in the 90’s?) but it seems they might have a real winner on their hands with yesterday’s announcement.
GoPro, maker of the Hero line of versatile wearable sports cameras and mounts, have partnered with the NHL and National Hockey League Players Association (NHLPA) to outfit players and referees with GoPro cameras starting with today’s All-Star Skills Challenge, and tomorrow’s NHL All-Star Game. These cameras will offer new and exciting ways for fans to watch the NHL. GoPro got a few of the sports’ biggest stars together to shoot a promo, showing some of the footage you’re likely to see over the next few days. It’s really pretty amazing.
Hockey really offers the perfect platform for this system though. Skating is a much smoother experience than the running, jumping, etc. of most other sports. Checking and hitting make for great video, and really who wouldn’t want to watch a first-person fight go down? I can’t imagine there will be cameras on very many players during regular season play for fear of impeding player movement, etc. but if the video footage above is any indication of what we can expect to see? Consider me excited!
These cameras will be tested over the All-Star weekend, and should seem some variety of rollout for the remainder of the 2015 season as well. You can read the entire press release from GoPro below.

NEW YORK / TORONTO (January 23, 2015) – The National Hockey League (NHL) and the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) today announced a North American partnership with GoPro, the maker of the world’s most versatile camera and enabler of some of today’s most immersive and engaging content. The agreement is GoPro’s first with a major professional sports league. As part of this unprecedented partnership, the NHL will use GoPro’s innovative equipment and expertise to deliver hockey fans never-before-seen perspectives of the game and the talents of the top players in high-definition video content during national and regional game broadcasts and across the digital and social media platforms of the NHLPA, NHL and GoPro.
To mark another first, GoPro’s Professional Broadcast Solution, developed in a partnership with Vislink, will deliver live HD points of view and will debut during the 2015 NHL® All-Star Weekend, which will be held Jan. 23-25 in Columbus, Ohio. GoPro cameras worn by players will deliver real-time HD content and multiple angles and views to bring viewers even closer to the action on the ice for the 2015 Honda NHL All-Star Skills Competition™ on Saturday, Jan. 24 (7 p.m. ET on NBCSN, CBC, TVA Sports). Additional GoPro points of view are anticipated for the live broadcast of the 2015 Honda NHL® All-Star Game on Sunday, Jan. 25 (5 p.m. ET on NBCSN, CBC, TVA Sports).

On-ice footage of the best players in the world is among the point-of-view GoPro content fans can expect this season.
