Chances are that even if you haven’t played Grim Fandango, you’ve heard of it. Spoken in hushed tones, held in reverence, it was the apotheosis of the now defunct Lucas Arts adventure games back when they were the king of their market. In its day it was a powerhouse of design, artistic, mechanistic and technical; a sweeping tale of deceit, ambition and love in the Land of the Dead.
However, the chances are also favourable that unless you were around to play it during its first flush of youth, you won’t have had the chance to sample its delights for yourself. Notoriously difficult to get to run on recent machines – even if you were lucky enough to get hold of a copy – it has been little more than a memory for over a decade.
Well, finally an updated release is here for PS4 and PC! We can find out whether the once-King of the genre still has the chops to play in today’s market; whether the revolutionary hud-free, fully 3D animation and the gorgeous, evocative, hand-painted backgrounds can stand the test of time. To commemorate the release of Grim Fandango Remastered, Double Fine released a brand new trailer.
I, for one, intend to relive what many consider to be the high-point of adventure gaming history.
