Rogue One Will Be First Star Wars Film Not Scored By John Williams

Last week we received the exciting news that the first Star Wars film not part of the numbered series, Star Wars: Rogue One, is coming down the pipe and it would be directed by Godzilla’s Gareth Edwards. It was revealed yesterday that Rogue One will mark another first for the Star Wars cinematic franchise – it will not feature a score from John Williams. Instead, composer Alexandre Desplat will be handling the music for the film as he let slip during an interview on Radio Classique’s Culture Club. Desplat previously worked with Gareth Edwards on Godzilla.
This won’t be the first time Desplat and Williams share work within a film franchise, either. Among the other 140-plus films that Williams has composed for is the first three entries from the Harry Potter series – Sorcerer’s Stone, Chamber of Secrets, and Prisoner of Azkaban, while Alexandre Desplat took the helm for the final two films – Deathly Hallows Parts 1& 2 – that ended the Harry Potter franchise.
To the average movie-goer or anyone who doesn’t pay particularly close attention to the score of a film, it likely won’t be much of a difference as the two have a very similar sound in their works. But with that said, it is going to be strange seeing the credits for a Star Wars movie without John Williams’ name scrolling by.
Star Wars: Rogue One begins shooting this summer with star Felicity Jones taking the helm and Gareth Edwards in the director’s seat. It is scheduled to be released on December 16, 2016. Details of a plot are are still mostly unavailable, but it is rumored to tell the tale of a group of characters separate from the core story of Star Wars.
