Kickstarter: Autonomous Desk By Robotbase Is The Standing Desk Of Your Dreams

|

The popular notion these days is that too much sitting will kill you. Plenty of studies have lead plenty of people to come to that same conclusion, though most office jobs still require 8-10 hours of sitting per day. Couple that with driving home from that office (sitting), plopping down on the couch to watch TV (sitting) and you can see how there’s a whole lot of sitting going on. There are various options for standing desks, from desk-mounted solutions, to manually adjusted desks, even electric adjustable height desks.  Robotbase has started a Kickstarter campaign for the next evolution in standing desks. Their Autonomous Desk uses their own custom AI to adjust to your schedule and make for a more pleasant standing working experience.

First, some good news: The Autonomous Desk has already hit their funding goal of $50,000. In 26 days the project will be funded and full production should start in June, with deliveries beginning in July. Robotbase has taken the Autonomous desk out and shown it off, and have simply turned to Kickstarter in order to better gauge demand in order to ramp up production. They’ve also already secured their production facilities and distribution of the main desk components is sorted out so they can assemble their desks at a reasonable price.

But what will you get if you choose to back Autonomous Desk? There are two options available, the Standard desk, which is simply their adjustable desk with memory pad to save up to four positions and adjust at the push of a button.  The standard option still has a few early-bird pricing options available at $399, while the Standard desk will sell for $499 without the special pricing.

For a few extra bucks you can get the Smart model desk. This is where some of the really cool toys come into play.  You’ll still get the adjustable desk and memory pad, but you’ll also get a bag and key hooks, wireless charging pad, USB charging, HD speaker, and companion iOS or Android app. Those last few pieces allow for the really cool part: A personal digital assistant. I mentioned the AI that Robotbase has developed for their Autonomous desk, and from the looks of things, it’s pretty damn cool. The Smart model also has a few early-bird funding options left at $599, or $699 without early-bird. Either model will have an additional shipping cost, since the desk weighs 120 pounds.

Robotbase already has a few popular services under their belt, including Nest, LIFX, Philips Hue, and Lockitron. Simply ask your personal assistant to make adjustments, such as raising or lowering the temperature, and through some sort of magic it will all be done. Robotbase has opened up the Autonomous Desk SDK for developers to create apps specifically for the Autonomous Desk. The success or failure of these apps will obviously depend on how many desks are out there, but it’s cool to see the possibility for expansion.

What do you think? Is this the standing desk of your dreams? Or maybe just my dreams? Check out their Kickstarter video below, then head to the source link if you want to back this project. Let us know what you think in the comments below or on your favorite social media site.
