OK, so saying a movie is the next classic of any genre is a bold thing but once you watch the trailer for Black Mass I’m fairly certain you’ll agree with me. I also could be dead wrong and you’ll all laugh and rip me a new one on social media, a risk I am willing to take. Johnny Depp is by far one of my favorite actors of all time. From Benny & Joon to Pirates of The Caribbean the man has some serious acting skills and is arguably probably one of the best ever in the business (OK you can burn me for that too if you like). In Black Mass Depp plays notorious Boston mobster James “Whitey” Bulger a man very much feared on the streets in his time.
In 1970s South Boston, FBI Agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton) persuades Irish mobster James “Whitey” Bulger (Johnny Depp) to collaborate with the FBI and eliminate a common enemy: the Italian mob. The drama tells the true story of this unholy alliance, which spiraled out of control, allowing Whitey to evade law enforcement, consolidate power, and become one of the most ruthless and powerful gangsters in Boston history.
The trailer is amazing and Depp’s performance is equally stunning from the little we see, it has some echoes of Ray Liotta in Goodfellas. This is one film I am looking forward to mostly because I am sucker for mob movies – everything from The Godfather, Donnie Brasco, Casino, Goodfellas and The Untouchables. I just love this genre of film and am glad there’s a new one coming.
