What started off as a Kickstarter project started by Laser Unicorns, the highly anticipated Kung Fury short has become a reality after 17,713 backers pledged $630,019 to help bring this project to life. Our Kung Fury review will start a little different than our other reviews… as it is available on YouTube feel free to watch it below first or skip over it for our review.
I’m going to assume at this point you watched the above short and are currently asking yourself what the heck you just watched, while at the same time thinking to yourself that it could quite possibly be one of the best things you’ve ever seen. If you didn’t watch it yet, here’s the short summary for just what Kung Fury is.
KUNG FURY is an over-the-top action comedy written and directed by David Sandberg. The movie features: arcade-robots, dinosaurs, nazis, vikings, norse gods, mutants and a super kung fu-cop called Kung Fury, all wrapped up in an 80s style action packed adventure.
Honestly, that sums it up. If you didn’t watch it above, do yourself a favour and watch it. Review done!

Kung Fury starts in 1985 Miami. A cop cruiser pulls up beside some tattooed thugs, asks for their gun permits, one of them drops his skateboard under the cruiser, steps on it and sends the cruiser flying through the air. The trio of thugs pull out their weapons and shoot the cruiser until it explodes. One gangster then shoots a random dude walking down the street with a boombox on his shoulder, the boombox goes flying and just happens to land perfectly on the gangster’s shoulder.
Sounds far fetched doesn’t it? This is only the beginning of the ride that is Kung Fury. The movie continues and includes everything from vengeful, living arcade machines to hacking time with a Nintendo Power Glove to vikings (and Thor), dinosaurs, a cop with a Triceratops head (Triceracop), and even a guest appearance by David Hasselhoff as the Hoff 9000. Best of all though is Kung Fury himself, a cop who drives a Lamborghini Countach outfitted with a Hoff 9000 system and has no issues taking out killer arcade machines and saving the day.
The plot isn’t anything special, a cop is struck by lightning to become the chosen one… Kung Fury. He uses his newly found powers to take out the Kung Fu Master who had just killed his partner (quite graphically I might add). When presented with a new partner, Triceracop, Kung Fury quits the force not wanting to have to deal with another potential partner dying. Moments later the phone rings, the chief answers it and the caller on the other end starts shooting through the phone and kills the chief. Hackerman arrives on the scene and they trace the calls origin to none other than Hitler, a.k.a. Kung Führer. The movie goes from there as Kung Fury and Hackerman hack time so they can go back in time and kill Hitler to prevent the death of the chief.
The movie plays off 80s cop movies, complete with cheesy music and dialogue. The movie is filmed in a style that reflects an old VHS copy, and even comes complete with static and tracking issues. There’s a suitable amount of gore, outrageous stunts, and crazy action sequences. In fact, the entire movie is one cheesy, action packed, 80s throwback. From female viking barbarians (Barbarianna) riding a giant wolf while toting a machine gun to Kung Fury using a Nazi as a skateboard, Kung Fury really is one ride you don’t want to miss. Just when you think you’ve seen and heard it all, Sandberg throws another well placed line of cheesy dialogue (Thor exclaiming it’s “Hammer Time” or the Hoff 9000 telling Kung Fury that “You don’t hassle the Hoff”) or crazy action sequence or spine ripping death your way.
Don’t get me wrong, this movie isn’t going to win any Academy Awards, the Kickstarter project delivered on exactly what it promised: an over-the-top action comedy featuring arcade-robots, dinosaurs, nazis, vikings, norse gods, mutants and a super kung fu-cop called Kung Fury.
