Where technology assists us in so many ways it can also be used to pretty much be an asshat. Reports are hitting the Internet of a new pervert hobby that will just make you shake your head and wonder why some people are allowed to breathe. The media already has a name for this pervert hobby dubbed “cyber-flashing”. Using Apple’s Air Drop feature, perverts are able to send dirty pictures to unsuspecting victims who happen to have their Air Drop feature set to “receive Air Drop from everyone”. Air Drop is an indispensable tool for some and I use it all the time when taking review photos with my iPhone – which I then Air Drop to my Mac for editing.
Victims do not have to accept the photo or file being Air Dropped to them but they do get to see a preview of the file on their phone while they dismiss the notification. So in the eyes of the pervert, they’ve accomplished what they set out to do (be a pervert). How some people come to the conclusion that it’s cool or thrilling to take part in such ignorant actions is beyond me but there is a simple way to prevent these pervs from making you a victim.
Air Drop is easy enough to control who you allow files to come from. Simply open control center by swiping up from the bottom of the home screen, tap Air Drop, then tap off or contacts only. If you have it set to “everyone” that means anyone can Air Drop files to your iPhone as long as they’re in range. Like any other pervert fad I’m sure this will pass given some time, in the meantime just turn off Air Drop until you need it or switch it to contacts only.
