Virtual Reality, or VR, is starting to become more mainstream and with it the need for consumers to create their own VR or fully spherical content. Bubl Technology Inc. have started shipping the world’s first fully spherical camera for consumers to Kickstarter backers and pre-order customers.

The Bublcam captures a full 100% spherical range in both photos and videos – which Bubl calls bubls – without missing any spots. Photos and videos can be taken directly with buttons on the Bublcam or through the Xplor mobile app. Content can then be viewed and shared within the Bubl Xplor app on iOS or Android, or on Bubl’s Cloud Service located at bubl.io.

A couple examples of photos taken with the Bublcam can be viewed at:

The Bublcam also includes features such as HDR and time lapse, and content is compatible with VR headsets, including Google Cardboard, Samsung’s Gear VR and Oculus Rift. Specifications include support for 4-32GB microSD cards, 4 5MP f/2.0 lenses at 190° FOV with a focal length of 1.2mm and minimum focus distance of 25cm, and a 3.7V LiPo 1560mAh battery. The camera itself is 3.14″ in diameter and weighs only 280g.

“We are all so happy and enthused to get the Bublcam in the hands of some of our biggest supporters and see the amazing moments they are creating,” said Sean Ramsay, CEO of Bubl Technology. “This is a huge milestone for our company and is just the beginning of bringing spherical technology to everyone.”

Don’t get your hopes up too high though if you’re interested in rushing out and ordering one, the Bublcam is currently in backorder due to popular demand and is priced at $799 USD.
