English writer Eustace Budgell in the newspaper The Spectator No. 605, October 1714 said: “Imitation is a kind of artless flattery.” That phrase has been re-worked a bit over the years but it still remains a great go-to quote to this day. So, in the smartphone world, Xiaomi is king of artless flattery from its many Apple-like devices to some of its accessories. Don’t get me wrong, that’s not a bad thing. Now Xiaomi is coming out with its latest form of flattery, this time paying homage to Samsung’s S6 edge.
The Mi edga, notice the use of the lower case “e” here as well, is a 5.2″ 2560×1440 resolution edge display smartphone that’s said to be running Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 808 64-bit hexa-core processor and will have 3GB or 4GB of RAM. Xiaomi is an interesting anomaly because it makes such great hardware but it seems to copy the designs which keeps the company out of the US market, due to possible patent lawsuits from the likes of Apple.
The Mi edga, from the render, looks like it’s going to be a slick phone straight out of Samsung’s blueprints too. Xiaomi phones do very well in China and India and it would be nice to see it come up with its own designs at some point so the company could make a run at the US market. I’ve used Xiaomi phones before and MIUI (a near copy of iOS) has it’s appeal. MIUI and Xiaomi could have a shot in the US, but not until they stop being so flattering.
