Jenna Coleman is out as the Doctor’s Companion. With Doctor Who Series 9 kicking off tonight (or yesterday depending on when you’re reading this), we’re set to see Peter Capaldi reprise the roll of the 12th doctor with his faithful companion Clara Oswald, played by Jenna Coleman, in tow.
However, it appears that Coleman won’t be zooming around the stars with the Doctor for that much longer. According to Coleman, she’s filmed her final scenes as the Doctor’s companion. As she put it:
“I have left the Tardis,” Coleman said. “It’s happened. I’ve filmed my last scenes.”
The kicker here is, we’re not sure when and why Clara leaves and we’re left wondering how the longest running companion — at least in the modern revival — will exit the show for good. The reason for Coleman’s departure is she will be playing a young Queen Victoria in another British television series.
Coleman made her first appearance on the show Sept. 1, 2012, as Oswin Oswald in the episode “Asylum of the Daleks.” She came back for the Christmas episode that same year, playing Clara. She’s been the companion ever since, playing alongside Matt Smith’s 11th doctor then Capaldi and the 12th Doctor.
In speaking on Coleman’s acting Capaldi was all about praise.
“Jenna has been absolutely brilliant,” he said. “I think she’s wonderful in the show, and she’s my favorite companion.”
That being said, it looks like Series 9 will see the end of the Impossible Girl’s run leaving a lot of questions unanswered. How will the 12th Doctor handle Clara leaving? Who will take on the honor and mantle of being the Doctor’s companion? Will it be another modern day British woman or will it be a number of other possibilities (an alien, a man, someone from the past to name a few).
Hopefully all of these questions will be answered in the new series. What do you think of Coleman’s leaving?
