Latest Global Stats Say Tizen Has Overtaken BlackBerry In Adoption

|

It should be no secret by now but BlackBerry‘s in-house operating system is a dying breed. Years of stagnating sales and difficulty in differentiating its devices from powerhouses running Android and iOS have made the BlackBerry platform an afterthought — hence why its latest effort is the Android-powered BlackBerry Priv.

If you needed even more evidence that the BlackBerry platform is in a downward spiral, you only need take a look at the latest global smartphone statistics gathered by Strategy Analytics to see that Tizen has now overtaken BlackBerry as the fourth largest mobile platform behind Windows Phone, iOS, and of course, Android. Strategy Analytics’ report wasn’t all about Tizen’s rise and BlackBerry’s fall, however — the report also details a decline in both Microsoft and Firefox’s market share during Q3 2015.

Just in case you needed a crash course in Tizen, Tizen is an open source operating system much like Android, however the difference is that Tizen is a far younger platform whose growth is almost solely being pushed forward by Samsung. In what is allegedly an effort to stop its stagnating innovation, Samsung has pushed Tizen onto its smartwatches and most recently its smartphones, with its first Tizen smartphone, the Samsung Z1, being released last year. The jury is still out on whether Samsung is ever going to turn Tizen into more than just a less popular version of Android, but the statistics do suggest that the platform still has legs to keep going.

We’ll be interested to see whether Tizen is going to continue this growth in years to come, perhaps even overtaking Windows Phone one day, however we struggle to see how it could ever challenge the likes of iOS and Android — only time will tell.
