Elon Musk Among The Backers Of Non-Profit OpenAI

|

Elon Musk has joined other tech investors in sinking money into a new non-porfit project called, OpenAI. Musk says he and the other investors have put at least a billion dollars into the project so far. With the development of self-driving cars, Musk and friends are hoping to go well beyond into actual robots that learn and interact as if human.

OpenAI, a nonprofit company introduced Friday that will research novel artificial intelligence systems and share its findings. Musk, chief executive officer of Tesla Motors Inc. and Space Exploration Technologies Corp. and Sam Altman, president of the Y Combinator, will serve as co-chairman. The nonprofit has received financial backing from Musk, Thiel, co-founder of PayPal Holdings Inc. and Palantir Technologies Inc., Reid Hoffman and others as well as companies including Amazon Web Services and Infosys.

The groups goal is a nobel one, to provide a better future for everyone but one can’t help but think of the Skynet scenario. As with any new form of technology arguments can be made for and against pretty simply. The benefits of artificial intelligence argument holds water, because who doesn’t want to make things better and simpler for humans. But the argument that artificial intelligence is dangerous also holds water, because who wants their machines turning against them.

It will be interesting to see what Musk and company do with OpenAI and just how far the research gets over the next few years. What do you think of OpenAI? What do you think of artificial intelligence? Let us know in the comments below or on Google+, Facebook and Twitter.
