Looks like John Boyega will be trading in lightsabers and Stormtroopers for Jaegers and Kaiju, at least temporarily. Deadline is reporting that the Star Wars actor is on board to play a leading role in the upcoming sequel to Pacific Rim.

Very little is known about the plot of the film, but Boyega will reportedly play the son of Idris Elba’s Stacker Pentecost character from the first film. Producer Mary Parent was quite pleased with getting Boyega on board:

It is undeniable that with all his talent and natural charm, John stands out amongst today’s generation of young leading men.

Guillermo del Toro was also quite complimentary, and reaffirmed his belief that the universe of Pacific Rim should mirror that of the real world as closely as possible, at least when it comes to the human cast:

I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox. The Pacific Rim universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. ‘The World saving the world’ was our goal and I couldn’t think of a better man for the job.

The sequel to the 2013 film is set to begin productionin the fourth quarter of this year, and will be directed by Steven S. DeKnight.
