New on Netflix US: August offers The Get Down, lots of choices for kids

Summer is drawing to a close, and that means that kids will be back in school. Netflix is giving kids one last hurrah before then with loads of new programming options for younger viewers. Add in some stand up comedy, and The Get Down, and you’ve got some quality August entertainment coming from Netflix US. Take a look at what you can catch on the streaming service starting in August. If you’re in Canada, check out what’s new on Netflix Canada for the month.

Netflix Original Series and Specials

The main draw this month is undoubtedly The Get Down. This music-driven drama has a pedigree like you wouldn’t believe, starting at the top with Baz Luhrmann, and extending through to the writers, directors, and hip-hop legends — Grandmaster Flash, DJ Kool Herc, and Afrika Bambaataa — that are consulting on the show. You’ll be able to get down with The Get Down on August 12th.

I mentioned stand up comedy? Well, there are a few heavyweights with new specials debuting on Netflix in August. Up first, David Cross, with his stand up special Making America Great Again! Fans can expect a raucous, raunchy, and decidedly not-safe-for-kids experience when this stand up special hits on August 5th.

Later in the month, a pair of comedy legends, Jeff Foxworthy and Larry the Cable Guy team up in their new special We’ve Been Thinking… We don’t know much about this special, but I can almost guarantee there will be at least a few “you might be a redneck” jokes. You can catch the special when it arrives for streaming on August 26th.

Netflix Original Films and Documentaries

Starting off the trend of child-friendly entertainment, we’ll see the debut of The Little Prince on August 5th. An animated telling of the classic story including a stellar voice cast, the trailer shows us a very stylized take on the story of The Little Prince.

XOXO follows six strangers whose lives collide in one frenetic, dream-chasing, hopelessly romantic night. Featuring Sarah Hyland of Modern Family, XOXO will be available to stream on August 26th.

The documentary Fearless follows a group of Brazilian bull riders as they make their way to the championships in Las Vegas. You can watch their journey starting on August 19th. Also on the 19th, check out I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead, the documentary following the journey of EDM superstar Steve Aoki as he heads to play the biggest show of his career at Madison Square Garden.

Netflix Original Series For Kids

Here’s the mother load for the month… August 3rd brings the debut of a new series, Beat Bugs. This story follows five young bugs and their adventures in an overgrown back yard. Their stories are inspired by Beatles songs.

Ever After High: Epic Winter returns with a new season on August 5th, where a curse on the Snow King causes global freezing, Crystal Winter and her pals must find a cure, or they’ll all live winterly ever after!

Season 2 of Project Mc² kicks off on August 12th. The show follows the exploits of a group of girls who are not only smart, but are secretly spies that use science and technology to take down the bad guys.

A brand new show for kids, Ask The StoryBots comes to the streaming service on August 12th. Based on the award-winning educational apps, the StoryBots are curious little creatures who live in the world beneath our screens and go on fun adventures to help answer kids’ questions.

Three brand new kids shows on Netflix in August? That’s right. Up next is the premiere of Bottersnikes & Grumbles, coming on August 19th.

Rounding out the month for kids are the second seasons for Puffin Rock, Dawn of the Croods, and Glitter Force. Puffins return on August 17th, while Croods and Glitter will arrive on August 26th.
