Let’s be honest here, Windows Phone hasn’t been tearing up the market in the United States but that doesn’t mean other countries don’t matter. India has a history of Windows Phone use and Microsoft knows it. The company unexpectedly unveiled a new Nokia phone, a name we all thought was gone. The Nokia 216 is a slim and compact smartphone with an insanely affordable price of ₹2500INR ($37USD). While the specs aren’t anything that would give a high end smartphone a run for its money, they are respectable enough for the price your paying for this little guy.

Microsoft is rumored to be re-branding their Windows Lumia line of phones to Windows Surface phones, which would fall in line with their other Surface products. It will be interesting to see how the Nokia 216 does in India and if the phone will be available in other countries. Many are predicting that Windows Phone will go the way of BlackBerry but I wouldn’t count Microsoft out just yet. They may not get to a point of head on competitiveness with Android and iOS but there is certainly a market for their mobile software and they could survive serving that market.
