Design

The ISOtunes earbuds aren’t anything special in terms of design. They don’t have any special materials like Adamantium or gallium-arsenide inside, and they don’t track your heart-rate. Nope, these earbuds are pretty plain and simple. Constructed from aluminum, foam and rubber the build quality is stellar, and you shouldn’t worry about these guys breaking very easily. The ends of the earbuds have magnets which allow you to snap your buds together, making them easier to store.

Follow the cable down a bit and you’ll run into the battery box and Micro-USB charging port. Follow that cable around some more and you’ll run into the control box which houses your volume up/down, multi-function button and noise-cancelling microphone. Overall the design is simple and straight forward with no flashy stuff to try and sell you.

Ease of Use

Like most Bluetooth devices these days, simply push the multi-function button to pair and connect using the Bluetooth settings on your phone. ISOtunes features multi-connect allowing you to connect to two devices at once. So if you’re listening to music on your tablet and a call comes in through your phone, you can switch over to the phone and answer. ISOtunes are also splash and sweat-proof and come with IPX3 rating, which isn’t bad but don’t go swimming with these. The earbud tips are made from Comply foam tips which are pretty much the same material used for earplugs in loud environments. The company also uses the latest Bluetooth 4.1 for connectivity. Overall these buds are simply to pair and very easy to use.

Sound

First let’s talk about the sound quality of the ISOtunes earbuds. I found the balance on these was fairly accurate with mids and highs represented evenly and well. These do favor the bass frequency a bit more than other earbuds I’ve used, but that could also be due to their extremely great fit in the ear. I have used better sounding earbuds around the same price point, but the noise isolation on the ISOtunes is insanely amazing. Whatever little sound quality difference there is between these and the other guy, it’s overshadowed by the fact that these earbuds do shut everything else out.

In my day job I have to use earplugs now and then in very loud server rooms. In the past I’ve brought earbuds into the server room to use instead of earplugs and while I’m well enough distracted by the music, I can still hear the servers blasting away. ISOtunes are basically earplugs with speakers in them. The best way to get the best fit and the best experience from these is to start by gently roll the tips in between your fingers. Next, pull the back of your ear up and slide the tip in letting go of your ear as the foam expands to take up the space. Be sure to be careful though, just like earplugs, you don’t want to insert them too far. The diagram below is an example of how it would be done.

ISOtunes

I was pretty amazed at the noise isolation these little buds offered. I also tested them while mowing the lawn and they worked brilliantly. I will say they don’t completely make everything quiet when the music isn’t on, but once the music is on, you can’t hear anything but the music. Overall the sound quality is great but adding in the noise isolation bumps it up to amazing.

Reception/Call Quality

Reception and call quality are second to none here. The noise cancelling microphone works great and of course having that noise isolation in the buds makes calls crystal clear.

Battery Life

ISOtunes advertises 4+ hours of battery life and in my testing that proved to be about correct when listening at around 50% volume. I normally run my headphones, earbuds, and earphones at 60% volume, but the noise isolation here is so good that I had to decrease the volume.

Price/Value

These are worth every penny of the $60 they’re charging.

Wrap Up

If you’re looking for noise isolating earbuds then look no further than ISOtunes, a well earned Techaeris Top Pick Award 2016.
