With Logan just a few short days away, there’s some relatively sad news in the X-Men world. A staple from the X-Men cinematic universe is stepping down. Well, I should say another staple from the X-Men cinematic universe is stepping down. We already knew that Logan would be the final time that Hugh Jackman put on the claws, but the movie will have another casualty. Sir Patrick Stewart confirmed in a town hall meeting for SiriusXM radio that Logan represents his last role as Professor Xavier.
The realization that he was done came during a screening of Logan. The SiriusXM town hall also included co-star Hugh Jackman and director/co-writer James Mangold. From the interview, he said:
A week ago, Friday night in Berlin, the three of us sat, watching the movie. And I was so moved by it, much more moved than I had been the first time of seeing it. Maybe it was the company of these two guys, but the movie ended and — this is an admission — but at one point [Hugh] reached out, and he took my hand in those last few minutes, and I saw him go [mimes wiping a tear from his eye] like this, and then I realized I had just done the same thing. Then, the movie ended… and we were going to be taken up on stage, but not until the credits were over. So, we had some time to sit there and, as I sat there I realized there will never be a better, a more perfect, a more sensitive, emotional, and beautiful way of saying au revoir to Charles Xavier than this movie. So, I told [Hugh] that same evening, ‘I’m done too. It’s all over.’
Actors will frequently speak highly of their movies. Some of that talk pans out while plenty more is just lip service and can be ignored. I am optimistic here, though. Everything I’ve seen from Logan looks fantastic, and I really hope that it will meet or exceed pretty high expectations. Patrick Stewart has earned my trust based on his performances in the past, so I’m willing to trust him here too. We’ll be able to find out for sure in just under a week when Logan is released in theaters.
