Blizzard teases Doomfist yet again — will this be the next Overwatch hero?

The Overwatch team at Blizzard has had to field questions nearly constantly about new heroes, updates to current heroes, and any number of other fan queries for their wildly popular team-based shooter. They’ve had mixed success in the way they’ve announced new heroes, with the good — Ana, and Orisa had very little fanfare, and were rolled out relatively quickly — and the bad — Sombra… love the character, hate the drawn out obnoxious ARG they set up to finally unveil her. Another character that has been teased as part of the lore from the very beginning may finally be making his way onto the roster. In a faux news article from the Times of Numbani, Blizzard has all but confirmed that we’ll be seeing Doomfist in Overwatch sooner than expected.

We first heard about Doomfist way back in the introductory cinematic trailer for the game. A pair of brothers are browsing through a museum of Overwatch history, and the younger brother comments on the Doomfist gauntlet before it is stolen by Reaper and Widowmaker. We’ve learned throughout the course of the game that Doomfist is the name taken on by the wielder of the Doomfist gauntlet, and that there has been more than one Doomfist. In the news post, we learn that the current iteration of Doomfist will be named Akande Ogundimu. Akande was sprung from Helix Security International’s classified maximum security installation, and naturally, the Talon organization had something to do with it.

It began in the early hours of the morning, when an unidentified aircraft approached the facility. Security initially reported that the craft had no passengers on board, based on radar scans. The craft passed through the range of the installation’s defense systems without incident, leading some to believe that Talon has moles within Helix. Video surveillance from within the compound revealed a black shadowy figure emerging from the craft and descending upon the prison grounds. The unidentified assailant easily overcame the Helix security agents, leaving over a dozen dead. Medical records of the casualties reveal injuries and cellular degeneration matching other incidents involving the mercenary known as the Reaper, all but confirming the incursion as a Talon attack.

Though we’ve all known about the idea of Doomfist for quite some time, these first announcements are more similar to the unveiling of Orisa than of Sombra. That’s a good thing because though Jeff from the Overwatch team has joked about another ridiculously long ARG to announce their next hero, he knows full well that nobody wants that even a little bit.

What we do want, however, is more information on the hero, and we want to see him as soon as possible! I think many of us would probably love to see Terry Crews voice the character, and I’m pretty confident he would love to do it too.

What do you think? Will we be seeing Doomfist in the PTR soon? Or is this just another in a long line of teases about the character? Tell us what you think in the comment section below, or on Google+, Twitter, or Facebook.
