Ready Player One teaser drops at SDCC 2017

Most people that grew up during the 80s have a bit of a soft spot for the decade that brought us loads of neon, parachute pants, and hair metal. Ernest Cline is no exception, and his novel Ready Player One is definitely a love letter to the 80s wrapped up in a near-future science fiction adventure. Steven Spielberg is bringing the book to the big screen, and today at San Diego Comic Con the first Ready Player One teaser was released to the world. You can check out the trailer above.

I read Ready Player One a few years ago, and generally enjoyed the story, though I found that some of the 80’s nostalgia was laid on just a bit too thick. The teaser gives us a glimpse at The Stacks, which look fantastic. The overcrowded slum area that simply stacks trailers and mobile homes on top of one another in an accident waiting to happen. It gives us a good look at why nearly everybody wants an escape in The Oasis, the Virtual Reality world of Ready Player One.

Without going into any plot specifics, we get to see some of the events of the story when we see the highly organized players from Innovative Online Industries (IOI). I understand that the movie will have a slightly different antagonist from the books, and I’d imagine that will likely be the orc-looking player in several scenes. We do also get a glimpse at Ernest Cline’s DeLorean during the race scene. Ernest has such a soft spot for the 80’s and pop culture that one of his first major purchases after the success of the book was to pick up a DeLorean, which he tricked out with gear from Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, Knight Rider, and Buckaroo Banzai. His license plate? Ecto88.
