You would think the news of having Microsoft Office for Chromebook would call for a big announcement. But in this case, it hasn’t. Apparently, Office capabilities on Chromebooks came in with a whisper.

Microsoft Office for Chromebooks has had a will it or won’t it debate. Since its announcement, Android apps for Chromebooks have come a long way. In that time, so has Microsoft Office. While a Chromebook here or a Chromebook there would receive support for Microsoft Office, it seemed random and arbitrary. But, after all this time it appears that most Chromebooks will now be able to use the productivity suite.

Reports of the ability to use the suite have been popping up all over the internet. So if you have a Chromebook, chances are you have access. It’s not all good news though. If you thought you’d be able to use Microsoft Office for Chromebooks for free, if you have a screen larger than 10.1-inches are you won’t. That will require an Office 365 subscription.

With other office suites on Android — especially those like G Suite that don’t cost money — the question on the need for Microsoft Office arises. Though anyone with a current Office 365 subscription and a Chromebook would benefit from this announcement. Of course, if you have a screen smaller than 10.1-inches you’ll be able to work with basic documents free of charge.

With the holiday season upon us, Microsoft Office for Chromebooks will certainly make the wallet-friendly devices a great holiday gift for students in your life. Of course as Chromebooks continue to grow in popularity, it’s certainly a great move for Microsoft’s bottom line.
