[UPDATED] Restore the “View Image” button in Google Images with this Chrome (and Firefox) extension

,

A couple of days ago, Google removed the “View Image” button when viewing image results in Google Images. Of course, this makes it harder to view full-sized images but there’s already a Chrome extension that restores the “View Image” button to the results.

UPDATE (02/17/2018 10:45 p.m. ET): Turns out there’s also an extension for those using Firefox. You can snag the Google Search “View Image” Button by devunt from the Firefox Add-ons store. Thanks to Alex Cruz for the heads up!

The View image extension located in the Chrome Web Store not only restores the button but also restores the also removed “Search Google with this image” link when right clicking on an image on a webpage. The extension was developed by a Joshua B. and according to more than a few reviews, seems to be on the up-and-up and non-malicious. The extension description is pretty short, but then again it does exactly what it says it does:

Re-impliments the google image, “View Image” and “Search by Image” buttons.

ViewImage adds the “Search by Image” and “View Image” buttons back to the google images results page.

The code for this extension is available on GitHub: https://github.com/bijij/ViewImage
Please feel free to make any PR’s or submit an issue.

In case you missed why the View Image button and link were removed, you can read about it in a previous article here at Techaeris but the TL;DR is that Google and Getty Images came to a licensing agreement which saw the removal as part of that agreement, as confirmed by Google in a tweet.

Unfortunately, there are many legitimate uses of trying to get directly to the full-sized image, such as getting the Wikimedia Commons version, as can be seen in the image at the top of the article. Fortunately, the easy way is back in action thanks to Joshua B. and his Chrome extension.

What are your thoughts about Google removing the “View Image” button from Google Images search results? Do you miss it enough to install an extension to restore it? Let us know in the comments below or on Google+, Twitter, or Facebook.
