With MWC2018 (Mobile World Congress) in full swing, the announcements are coming out pretty quick and heavy. One of the latest comes from Sony and, as suspected, the Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact have received a design refresh and now feature a sleeker and rounder design. That’s not all, of course, and the new devices have also received some camera upgrades and other new features.

“If entertainment is your priority, then our new Xperia XZ2 and Xperia XZ2 Compact are your smartphones,” said Hideyuki Furumi, Executive Vice President, Global Sales and Marketing, Sony Mobile Communications, “From the world-class technology on the inside to the new sleek, sophisticated design, these smartphones are everything you need and more. We have pushed Sony’s boundaries even further with our new products for movie recording, viewing, and music listening – offering entertainment to the extreme.”

Some of the key new features of the new Sony Xperia flagship devices include:

  • Xperia XZ2 is the most immersive entertainment device to captivate your senses with extended 5.7” HDR Full HD+ display, powerful stereo speakers, plus the brand new Sony Dynamic Vibration System that brings your content to life. Motion EyeTM camera now has world’s first 4K HDR movie recording in a smartphone and Full HD 960FPS Super slow-motion recording
  • The world’s most compact 5” smartphone, Xperia XZ2 Compact offers premium performance with extended 5” HDR Full HD+ display, the latest Motion EyeTM camera experience, and Sony’s advanced AV technologies to maximize your entertainment in the palm of your hand
  • Both smartphones feature the Qualcomm® SnapdragonTM 845 Mobile Platform designed to deliver superior experiences and performance with Gigabit LTE download speeds to satisfy the most demanding technology enthusiasts
  • Brand new dual camera technology innovation with ultra-high sensitivity displayed at MWC

The new design focuses on what Sony refers to as “ambient flow” which couples the Xperia’s IP68 water-resistant look with dynamic curves and arches. While the Xperia XZ2 features an all-glass design, the Xperia XZ2 Compact features a hard-coated polycarbonate back panel with an anti-scratch glass-like finish. The new design houses an 18:9 Full HD+ (1080×2160) HDR display — 5.7″ on the Xperia XZ2 and 5″ on the Xperia XZ2 Compact — which also includes software that upgrades SDR video to HDR-quality.

As far as technical specifications are concerned, both smartphones are powered by the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor with X20 LTE, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage. The Xperia XZ2 houses a 3180mAh battery with the Xperia XZ2 Compact shipping with a 2870mAh battery. Both devices also support Qnovo Adaptive Charging and wireless charging technology.

Equipped with a 19MP Motion Eye rear 25mm G Lens F2.0 camera, the Xperia XZ2 series are capable of 4K HDR movie recording, low-light photography with an ISO of 12800, and low-light video with an ISO of 4000. Super slow motion video seems to be a theme at MWC this year and Sony has also included 960FPS super slow motion video capture at Full HD, unlike the limited 720p super slow motion capture other devices are limited to. As for the front-facing camera, Sony has placed a 5MP, 23mm wide angle, F2.2 shooter with the same 5-axis stabilization available on the rear camera.

Sound is also getting a boost with Sony’s S-Force Front Surround Sound stereo speakers which are 20% louder than previous Xperia models. A new Dynamic Vibration System is also featured on the new devices.

“…the Sony Dynamic Vibration System, a combination of Sony’s unique sound analysis technology that generates optimized vibration patterns and Sony’s unique low frequency actuator that creates a synchronized visual-sound vibration that allows you to feel what you see and hear. The Sony Dynamic Vibration System will stimulate your senses to deliver more immersive music, video, and gaming experiences.”

Both devices will be available later this spring and will ship with Android 8.0 (Oreo). The XZ2 will be available in Liquid Silver, Liquid Black, Deep Green, and Ash Pink. The XZ2 Compact will be available in White Silver, Black, Moss Green, and Coral Pink. The smartphones will come with an MH750 headset, QuickCharger 3.0, and a USB Type-C adapter. Pricing has yet to be announced. A range of accessories, including a Wireless Charging Dock, a 2-way Style USB Audio & Bluetooth Headset, and the new Open-ear Stereo Headset will also be available for the Xperia XZ2 line.
