Netflix and the Duffer brothers continue to gear up for the third season of Stranger Things and roles are starting to fill up fast. The latest news out of the Stranger Things camp tells us that Cary Elwes and Jake Busey will be joining the cast for season 3. Do either of these actors fill the roles that were previously speculated? Yes, yes they do — even if they don’t necessarily fit some of the exact descriptions previously given.

Cary ElwesCary Elwes will play the role of Mayor Kline. The previously leaked description puts his first name as “Larry” but the official release doesn’t specify so we’ll just have to wait and see if that’s how it plays out. The leaked description and official descriptions match up pretty well, describing a kind of scummy politician who is really just kind of a jerk:

Handsome, slick, and sleazy, Mayor Kline is your classic 80s politician — more concerned with his own image than with the people of the small town he governs.

Elwes is, from all accounts, an exceptionally nice man, but he’s also a pretty great actor and should have no problem here. I’m interested to see what kind of role Mayor Kline will have, since local government has been mostly absent (aside from the police, of course) up until this point in the Stranger Things world.

Jake BuseyJake Busey is up next, taking up the role of “Bruce.” Here the original description differs slightly from the announcement:

He’s a journalist for the The Hawkins Post with questionable morals and a sick sense of humor.

The original description pegged Bruce as “outwardly sexist, overweight and bedraggled.” Busey has enough range as an actor to pull off “outwardly sexist” if necessary, though you’re not likely to get “overweight” from Jake. You’d have a much easier time getting “bedraggled” from his dad, Gary Busey, but I’m sure Jake could get all disheveled too.

It’ll be a reunion of sorts for the two actors, who shared the screen in 1996 with Twister. Cary had a slightly larger role here, but Jake remembers that time fondly:

Elwes and Busey will join Maya Thurman-Hawke as new cast members on Stranger Things season 3.
