Netflix Smart Downloads keeps your offline binge library current

Netflix is constantly evolving the service, hoping to make it easier for you to watch your favourite movies and binge watch your favourite shows. After releasing Mobile Previews back in April for iOS and Android, the streaming video company is now adding Smart Downloads to its stable of mobile features.

The Download feature was first released back in 2016 but requires users to download and then delete watched shows and movies from their devices. Smart Downloads takes this a step further by deleting a watched downloaded episode and then downloading the next episode the next time you’re connected to a Wi-Fi network.

As mentioned, Smart Downloads only downloads when you are on a Wi-Fi connection. It can also be toggled on or off in your preferences in case you’d prefer to continue to manage your downloaded content manually. The feature sounds like it should work quite well. If you’ve downloaded the first three episodes of a show and watched the first one, the next time you’re on Wi-Fi, Smart Downloads will delete the first episode you finished watching and then download the fourth to make sure you’re never out of episodes to watch while on the go.

Smart Downloads will be hitting Android devices starting today with iOS support coming soon. You can find out more about how Smart Downloads work in the Netflix Help Center.
