Netflix HDR support appearing on Pixel 3 devices

Netflix HDR support has been rolling out over the couple years or so, starting with the LG G6 back in May of 2017. The list of supported devices is growing steadily, sometimes announced, sometimes unannounced. One of those unannounced additions seems to be the Pixel 3/3 XL from Google.

Scrolling through the Netflix app on my Google Pixel 3 this morning, I noticed the HDR tag beside Bird Box, something I haven’t seen on mobile yet. One of our other writers confirmed it is also showing on his Pixel 3 XL. I did a quick Google search and it appears some users have the feature on their Pixel 3 devices, while others don’t. This would indicate some sort of server-side rollout which quite often happens with new features.

HDR comes in two formats: HDR10 and Dolby Vision. The Pixel 3 and its larger sibling both support HDR and are UHDA certified. As for which specification the Pixel 3s follow is something we’re currently trying to track down, however most of the Android devices listed by Netflix support Netflix HDR with HDR10.
