A few decades ago, playing video games was seen as a hobby for children and teenagers. How things have changed. Now, people of every age, nationality, and social background enjoy playing video games. Video games have become so popular that some of the most watched videos on video sharing sites like YouTube are of people watching people play video games. E-sports have revolutionized gaming, turning it into a serious competition played by serious professionals.
A short while back, video games were only played on monitors or TVs. However, in recent years more people are turning to projectors as the display option of choice when playing video games. In this article, we are going to look at some of the pros and cons of using projectors in this way.
Pro: Offers a More Immersive Environment
High-end projectors have resolutions of 4096 x 2160 pixels. These 4K projectors are able to take the world of fantasy created in video games and completely immerse the player in it. Short throw projectors can be placed just a few inches or a few feet away from the projected surface and still project a large image. All this means that even in a smaller space, projectors make it possible for gamers to experience their gaming world as if it were real life.
Purchasing a high-end projector can be expensive. For the same price as purchasing a 4K resolution projector, a gamer may be able to purchase multiple 4K gaming monitors. Even when talking about 1080P units, projectors usually cost more than a monitor. In fact, it is possible to purchase a 1440P or even a low-level 4K monitor for the same price as a 1080P projector. That being said, there are a number of more budget-friendly projectors that may meet the needs of a casual gamer.
Pro: Cheaper Image Size to Cost Ratio
While purchasing a projector may be more expensive than purchasing a monitor with the same resolution, a projector offers a larger display for a cheaper price. For example, a projector that is able to display a 200-inch image is going to be a lot cheaper than a television with the same resolution and the same size screen. This makes projectors a better option for users who want to have a large viewing area.
Con: Most Projectors Have Fixed Resolution
Most projectors have fixed resolution. Televisions and monitors are designed to support multiple resolutions. This is important for gamers as they may want to lower the display resolution, especially if they are playing games that have intensive graphics with low frames per second. Since most projectors do not offer this as an option, users would need to pick a projector that has the resolution they want beforehand. If a user is used to using a projector that has high resolution and high detail, using a projector with lower resolution is going to be a disappointment.
Pro: Compact Size
Televisions take up space. The larger screen television you have, the more space that will be used. You will need a cabinet or a mount to attach it to the wall. Projectors are small. They can be stored on a small table or shelf. It is easy to hide a projector from sight after use. With a television, it’s still going to take up space in the room when it is off.
Con: Lack of Speakers
Most television sets come with decent quality speakers. Some of them actually come with high-quality speakers. Most projectors do not come with speakers, and those that do come with speakers will have a 2 W or a 5 W speaker. They are not good for watching movies or enjoying the high-quality sound in most video games. This means that users will need to purchase headphones for their projector or an external sound system.
Pro: Flexible Display Size
Projectors offer a flexible display size. You can adjust the size of the display screen by moving the location of the projector or by using inbuilt features. When you purchase a television or a monitor, you get a fixed display size that cannot be adjusted. This means that you will need to purchase a TV or monitor that is the exact size you want to use for your gaming at all times.
Con: Higher Input Lag
Projectors have a higher input lag. Input lag is the time it takes from between when you hit the button on the controller and the moment that movement is duplicated on the screen. Some televisions and monitors have input lag of as little as 1 ms. Projectors that have been specifically designed for gaming are doing good if they have an input lag 15 ms. However, it is common for projectors to have an input lag of 50 ms or higher. Input lag is important for individuals who play multiplayer games competitively online. A millisecond can mean the difference between success or failure.
Pro: Larger Viewing Area
Projectors offer a larger viewing area. They are able to display images that have a height and width of several feet. Televisions and monitors have a smaller image, and the experience playing on them is not as immersive. With a projector, you are able to turn a larger screen or an entire wall into your gaming field. This means that when you are engaging with friends in split-screen games, each of you could theoretically have your own screen that is as large, if not larger, than most large-screen TVs.
There is no denying the popularity of projectors in the world of gaming. Projector manufacturers are tailoring their products so that they will meet the demanding requirements that high-end gamers have. For the time being, high-resolution projectors can be expensive. However, they offer a gaming experience that cannot easily be matched on the largest of televisions.
