If you are just starting out on the career ladder, you may be trying to decide whether joining a startup or joining an established corporate setup is the best choice. There is often more stability and a higher salary to be had in an established company but startups often provide more flexibility and more perks.

There are plenty of other factors which can help to influence your decision too; not least is the affect your choice will have on your future career. When you are making your decision there are several questions that you should ask yourself.

Have you already defined your career path?

If you are still in the process of deciding what your career path will be you may want to access some training as well as embarking on your career; click here for more information. You may also want to consider working for a startup rather than a corporate enterprise.

This is because working for a startup will normally give you more opportunity to sample different roles and experiences. Startups are smaller by nature so most people who work for them end up taking on a variety of different roles.

This can be a good thing if you are starting out on your career path and are uncertain as to where you want it to lead. Getting experience in different roles can help you to solidify your career choice.

How do you best learn and grow?

Different people acquire knowledge and expertise in different ways. If you like to be independent, to learn for yourself and to take risks, you will probably thrive in a startup environment.

However, if you have just completed your business degree or related qualification, you may be used to the structure of having support and advice on hand. You are more likely to find this in an established company where your colleagues will have knowledge and experience that they can share with you.

What level of influence are you looking for?

If you like the idea of having a say in how a company runs, you may find working in an established corporate enterprise frustrating; at least at first. If you start near the bottom of the ladder you will have very little influence. Of course, this can change as you progress down your career path and gain promotion.

If you want to have influence from the start, you may find a startup environment less restrictive. You are likely to be more involved in the day-to-day running of the business and you are likely to have more input. However, there are fewer layers in the structure of a startup. This means that progression upwards can be somewhat limited. You may have to be satisfied with developing your role in a sideways direction.

Where are you most likely to be successful?

Taking everything into account you need to decide which environment is likely to help you achieve the success you are looking for. If you like the idea of working in an innovative and evolving environment where you can take risks and think creatively working for a start-up might be a good choice. However, if you would rather be in a structured environment, where you can be methodical in your career advancement, you may prefer a corporate career. You have to make the choice that is best suited to your personality.
