Currently there are three major players in the smartphone mobile operating system market, Android, iOS and Windows Phone. All of these can be found globally with different shares of different markets. Now Firefox is attempting to assert itself into a virtually untapped market starting in India, the low-budget market. While there are plenty of people who can afford the latest flagship phones from each respective mobile OS there’s an equal number of people who cannot afford to have an iPhone, HTC M8 or Nokia phone in their pockets.

Kickstarter: Tall Tails By Zuul Labs

Zuul_Tall_Tails_Banner_1

You don’t necessarily think of game companies having a conscience, but Zuul Labs is looking to buck that trend. Zuul Labs is in the middle of a Kickstarter campaign for their new puzzle/adventure game: Tall Tails. Tall Tails is different from most other games and apps in that a portion of their proceeds from the game will be donated to help rescue dogs in need. Zuul certainly isn’t the first company to do something like this, but it’s definitely rare and refreshing to see. Read on to learn a little bit more about the team and their game.

Motorola Shuts Down US Assembly Plant – Offers Moto X Discount

Moto-x-deal

Just the other day, Motorola announced that they’d be shutting down their North Texas assembly facility for the Moto X, not quite a year after it opened with a big party.  Selling a phone that was assembled in the United States – even if most of the parts were sourced from overseas – was a big selling point for Motorola.  While plenty of cell phones are designed and modeled in the US, the Moto X was the only phone to be assembled here.  Slumping sales of the custom-designed  Moto-X were likely to blame.  While the Moto X is a well-designed phone with decent specs, it never took off like I’m sure Motorola would have wanted.

What If Apple Is Buying Beats For Future Wearable Tech?

Welcome to the darkside Beats
Welcome to the darkside Beats

It makes me sick to my stomach just typing it. This entire deal makes me angry.  As someone who would like to see Apple prosper (please do not interpret that to mean I’m a fangirl) I just can’t wrap my head around this deal.  I will admit, I purchased a pair of craptastic Beats earbuds recently (read: within the past year) and was gravely disappointed.  How could headphones cost this much and sound so horrible?  At that point I ended any dealings with Beats.  So when I heard that Apple purchased Beats…it was just a sad day.

Surface Pro 3 Gets Official, Actually Seems Pretty Sweet

Surface Pro 3
Microsoft’s Surface Pro 3

Today Microsoft announced the release of the Microsoft Surface Pro 3. For those living under a rock, the Surface Pro represents Microsoft’s vision of how tablets and laptops can occupy the same space and how Windows 8 as an operating system can handle different use cases. I suppose there are arguments to be made about the successes and failures of that vision but today breaks the mold, literally.  Today, Microsoft shows off the new Surface Pro 3, the first in the line of laplets (I just made that up, don’t hurt me) to deviate strongly from the original’s design.

Draco-1-Powerbank

Draco Designs makes some of the most beautiful aluminum bumpers on the market and after a few bumper reviews they sent along their 5000mAh Ducati Powerbank. Review: Supernova S5 Aluminum Bumper For Galaxy S5

Draco-Supernova-9

Draco Designs is no stranger to Techaeris or, for that matter, to my hands. I’ve reviewed their awesome products before, and when they sent me their Supernova S5 for the Samsung GS5 I knew I was getting something special. Before we get too deep into the review I will say this, as I always say before reviewing something of this caliber…this bumper is high quality, and it comes with a higher cost than other bumpers.  If you’re not prepared to spend a little money, then this is probably not the bumper for you. Now on with the show.

Nintendo Lacks Focus – A Proposal

Nintendo_Logo

Over the last few months analysts and consumers alike have realized that Nintendo has a potentially serious problem. Sales are faltering and brand recognition is being overtaken by other companies, namely Sony, Microsoft and, to a lesser degree, brands available on more mobile devices than Nintendo’s proprietary mobile hardware. Our own Justin Jelinek reported on this earlier last week.

XDA Developers send along word that Researchers at Columbia University have created a way for iOS Apps to run on Android.  While Android has certainly decreased iOS’s lead in app quality/quantity over the last few years, there are still iOS exclusives that will probably never come to Android.  The University’s project, code named Cider, looks to change that.

Multitasking-iPad-Air-Gary-Wang

Apple has long been known to march to the beat of their own drummer. It’s a very rare occurrence that they follow what other industry competitors are doing in terms of hardware and software. One of the things Samsung and Windows has been doing on their tablets (and phablets for that matter) is multitasking. TechnoBuffalo (via 9to5 Mac) is reporting sources have revealed that iOS8 will indeed allow users to multitask on the iPad by having two applications open at once with the ability to interact with each other. The new interface is said to only function in landscape mode, competitors allow for portrait mode too but the talk is landscape only for iPad.

Google Now Helps You Shop: It Just Got Real, Folks

products searched avail nearby

Been searching for that new tablet on Google lately?  If so, Google may recommend, via Google Now, when you are near a store that carries it.  They will even conveniently tell you the price.  In one sense, this is the oldest rule of retail: the impulse purchase.  High margin impulse purchase items with high turnover are kept near the front of the store, tempting you to snag that candy bar or soft drink you’ve been thinking about since you saw it on the way in.
