When the Xbox One was first announced last year at E3, it was obvious that Microsoft was really trying to push the digital model for gaming. Some users of the September 1409 dashboard update preview have noticed something new – Free Play Day in the Deals with Gold section.
UPDATE (08/22/2014): Microsoft sent a statement out saying the game was posted in error.
Microsoft’s statement reads as follows:
“A promotional tile for ‘Max: Curse of the Brotherhood’ was posted briefly on the US dash in error yesterday. We apologize for any inconvenience. We’re constantly exploring different ways to offer more benefits to our Xbox Live Gold members and will keep them updated when special offers become available.”
Reddit user JBurton90 posted a screenshot (as seen above) showing the recently free Games with Gold offering Max: Curse of the Brotherhood labelled as a “Free Play Day” title. Details are slim right now, but one can assume that a “Free Play Day” would consist of access to a featured game for a 24 hour period. It is also unclear if this would be full access and whether or not achievements would be unlockable during this time period.
When asked about the new feature on Twitter, the official Xbox support account seemed unaware of the new feature but after looking into it a bit more told Twitter users to “keep an eye on your Xbox One”.
With the recent addition of EA Access to the Xbox One, confirmation of digital pre-loading (and hints of digital pre-ordering), it looks like Xbox is making it even easier for gamers to buy into the digital download gaming ecosystem – not to mention increasing the value of the $60/yr Xbox Live Gold subscription with free monthly games, Deals with Gold, and now (it looks like) a try-before-you-buy feature on select games.
