Will Ferrell Hates Cancer, Challenges Gamers to Donate

Will Ferrell, partnering with Donate Games and Cancer For College, has challenged gamers to help him defeat cancer and win a chance to play a game with him live on Twitch. Ferrell issued the challenge through a video on his comedy website, Funny Or Die. In it, he calls on gamers to donate up to $375,000 in the fight against cancer.

Anyone who donates at least $10 to the cause will be entered to win the grand prize of an all-expense paid trip to San Francisco to play video games with Will Ferrell himself on a live Twitch stream, as well as an exclusive tour of the Twitch offices in downtown San Francisco. It’s not known what games will be played or who will get to choose, but should you get chosen might I suggest making a famous celebrity play Five Nights at Freddy’s or another horror game. We have a chance to scare a famous person senseless on camera, please don’t blow it.

Along with being entered to win the trip to game with Ferrell, there will be donation tiers for anyone willing to shell out a few bucks to help kids fight cancer. Rewards range from a $5 Amazon games gift card for donating $10, all the way up to a specialized Will Ferrell edition sunscreen and other SuperMegaBlastMax Challenge branded apparel.

Jim Carol, founder of Donate Games, also confirmed that this will be a monthly event hosted by the company, telling IGN, “We’re going to be working with Twitch to do one of these a month. Every month we’ll have a celebrity.” While he did not hint at who would be on board, there are plenty of celebrities who have professed their love for gaming in the past that would be perfect. Vin Diesel, Mila Kunis, William Shatner, and Jimmy Fallon are all known to be at one point be pretty big World of Warcraft players so they’d be a perfect fit should this Will Ferrell outing prove to be popular enough. There’s also the possibility that internet celebrities could pitch in every month, including other popular Twitch streamers. The pool Donate Games has to choose from is essentially endless.

This may be the biggest name in the Twitch charity scene to date, but it is far from the first. Ever since the streaming platform’s inception, small time occasional streamers and large streams solely dedicated to raising money for charities have emerged. It’s not uncommon to hop on Twitch at any given time and find dozens of streamers doing 24-hour nonstop streams to raise money for a cause, or just pledging to donate any money from subscriptions they get for the day to charity of their choice. Other such charity events broadcasted on Twitch in the past have raised upwards of $1 million, so there’s little doubt this celebrity-powered venture will blow past its $375,000 goal in no time as it continues to get more coverage and promotion from Twitch and its streamers.

If you wish to donate and enter for a chance to 1v1 Will Ferrell, you can do so at their Indiegogo page here.
